Hi there,
My name is Sinead Monteith.
I was looking around the web today for information on my surname and I came across your web page.
My father is John Monteith he is 59
His father was also John Monteith as was his father before that.
We never met any of my grandpa's family, and dad doesn't really know anything about his side of the family.
My fathers home was near Strabane in Co. Tyrone, we now live in Co. Derry.
My grandma is still living so I may be able to find something out about John Monteiths family - but she is 82 now and her memory may not be up to it.
My father has 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
TALK SOON

Mr. Monteith,

My name is Karen Monteith-Jones.  I am looking for family history on the Monteith's and I am hoping you can help me in some way.

I have no connection to the Monteith side of my family.  I know very little about my dad or his family.  I will provide you with some of the information that I know and perhaps you can fill in some blanks for me or direct me somewhere else.

Here is what little I know;

My father's name is Alasdair Paris Monteith (Monty).  Born approximately 1937 I believe in St. Thomas.  His father's name is Thomas and his mother's is Gwendolyn.  I have no knowledge of any middle names nor of her maiden name.  He has one brother named Ian Monteith.  I am not sure of his wife's name but I know he has two adopted children, names unknown to me.  I was told that his line of genealogy came from Scotland but this may or may not be true.

I don't know whether or not you can help me with this in some way but I would sincerely appreciate any direction that you can give.

Thank you for your time!
Karen Monteith-Jones

I am seeking any information regarding a person called MJ Monteith. I have some original advertising art drawn by this person dated 10-14-01. I have evidence that shows MJ traveled from Chicago, Ill. to Mineral Point, Wisconsin on 10-13-01. Possibly this person worked for some style of "general store supplies" broker. Any feedback would be appreciated. Please send response to Framingplus@MHTC.net.

I was wondering if anyone submitted anything on the Monteith's from Quebec.  I have a Martha/Matilda Monteith b.1815 residing in Huntingdon Quebec.  She was married to Robert Douglass b.1805.  Originally she was listed as coming from County Tyrone, Ireland.  She might be the sister to a George B.Monteith (also from Huntingdon) who married Mary Douglass b.1840.
Below are other Monteith's from that area that I am pretty sure that are related to my Martha/Matilda Monteith.

I have a large painting of Archie Monteith.

My Great Grandmother, Virginia Lehman Brant Monteith was married to Archie.  This was her 2nd marriage.

I do not know if Archie had any children, I do not have any information about his family.

Virginia passed away in 1990 (?) and Archie passed away a year or two later.  They lived in West Palm Beach , Florida but ( I believe ) came to Florida from Cumberland Maryland in the 40’s or 50’s.

If anyone is interested in the painting please contact me by e-mail at shill@fbclew.com.  I will be happy to send it to you.

Im sure your Northern Ireland tree is missing a branch or two. My father was born in tulleyherin <sp> near Newtownstewart to Robert Monteith and Nellie Monteith formerly Black. Robert and Nellie had sixteen children of which a handfull still live around Omagh. My father moved to Canada where he still lives in B.C. Do you know any more about this branch?

Dear Monteith Families,
The message I sent to you on 25th April 2005 had the incorrect Birth year for Capt. Robert Monteith.
He was born 1879, not 1897, in WICKLOW Southern Ireland.
Robert was a Captain and got involved with Roger Casement who was Hanged by the British for TREASON in 1916.
Robert was on the German Submarine that was getting them back to Ireland.
Robert died in USA in 1952.
I am making this enquiry for another Monteith who needs the exact date to get his Birth Certificate, from Southern Ireland, and continue with her own Monteith Tree.
I hope there is someone who can help.
Thank you.

Hello,

I've just been reading this fascinating site and would like to post a message about my Monteith connection. I'm Australian and my mother's dad's family were Campbells from Glasgow. My g-g-g-grandmother was Hannah Monteith, born 1818 at St Ninian's, Stirlingshire. Her parents were John Monteith and Mary Ann Shepphard. Hannah married Alexander Campbell in 1839 and lived until 1911. Hannah's brother was Edward, born 1820, died 1880. He married Ann Stevenson. I have quite a bit of info on his children, including Hugh who moved to Lancashire, England and had a large family, and Marion, who married Hugh McLundie and moved to the USA. I haven't confirmed it yet but I believe that Elsie Elizabeth McLundie "Peggy" Bolton is a grandchild of Marion. I found a little info about her online at http://www.sec.state.la.us/museums/osc/month/day-aug.htm

I've been going nuts trying to find John Monteith's death at Scotland's People, I know he passed away between 1866 and 1880. I'm looking for anyone who knows of a John Monteith married Margaret Wright in 1827, this could be his 2nd marriage. Or, of course, anyone who knows of my branch. Although Hannah was born at St Ninian's, all other references point to the family being in Glasgow.

Hannah's son John, emigrated to Australia with his wife and 2 sons, Alex and John. I was interested to note the politicians on your site as both my grandfather and his father were Labor pollies in NSW in the Liquor trades union.

Many thanks for all your work!

Katrina Smythe

Hello there,

Are you still compiling names for this website of the Monteith’s?  My great-grandmother was a Monteith, but I don’t know her first name (it may have been Mary).  She married a man whose last name was Dunbar and they had four children who were born in Castlederg.  He (Dunbar) was a stone-mason.  My grandmother was one of their children – born in 1899 and named Margaret Ann Dunbar.

I am trying to research this area of our family tree, so if you could give me any assistance, it would be appreciated.  I am planning to come over to the Castlederg area in the fall of this year (I live in Canada), so would like a few leads to follow up on!

Hi,
My husband was surprised to find his and our children's names on your website. I was born Michelle Darcy and am a descendant from Ian Hoyland Menteith. The story I have always been told by my mother Diane is that the females in the family did not get the Hoyland in their names and her birth certificate would certainly support this. Only the boys got it and it was never a hyphenated name. I think from what is on the site that it was my uncle Jimmy that supplied the information and he should know about this, but perhaps it was a combination of supplied info and assumption.
Anyway, some of the info is wrong. I was born in 1971, not '72 for one thing. I am not sure about all the others as I have not looked too closely.
Also, what is the connection between Menteith's and Monteith's?
Yours,
Michelle Roberson (nee Darcy)

I'm looking for a History of the Monteith Clan to give as a wedding present. The wedding is a union of the Cameron Clan with the Monteith Clan. I have located a History of the Cameron Clan but the only History of the Monteith Clan I could  locate is out of print and I have been unable to find a copy. I will be glad to pay for this book and the shipping charges. We will have family members at the wedding wearing kilts with the tartan of both clans and wedding guests are coming from Scotland and Ireland. These young people are proud of their Scottish Heritage. Please help me start them off with a history of their respective clans.
Thank You,
Jim Young

My niece and I are members of the Clan Cameron. She is getting married in June to a decendent of the Clan Monteith ( Dr. Dan Moniteith of the University of Alaska Southeast ). To make a long story short I want to give them a wedding gift consisting of a History of the Clan Monteith and a History of the Clan Cameron. I have located a History of the Clan Cameron but cannot locate a History of the Clan Monteith. I did locate one history of the Clan Monteith but it was out of print and no copies could be located. I would appreciate the assistance of your membership to locate the Monteith History book. I will be glad to pay for the book if we can locate a copy.
These two young people are very proud of their Scottish Heritage. There will be people wearing kilts with the Cameron and the Monteith Tarten and some wedding guests are coming all the way from Edinborough, Scotland to Juneau, AK for the wedding. We will also have family members there from Skerries, Ireland.
Can you help us locate this History of the Monteith Clan so we can get these young people off to a good start?
Thank You,
Jim Young

I thought that it was interesting as I was looking at this website because in Generation 4 number 43 Lynnwood Monteith was my grandfather. However you are missing 8 of his children. My father was their 5th child. From oldest to youngest, they went Blanch, Gloria, Sylvia, Lynnwood Jr, Kevin (my father), George, Pam, Patty and Derek
Pam does not have any children
Lynnwood has one child
George, Kevin, and Derek all have two children each
Blanch and Sylvia both have three children each
Patty has five children
Gloria has eight children
Blanch, Sylvia, and Gloria all have grandchildren
My name is Heather Monteith, and I have a sister named Sarah

I have a book that was made call the History of the Monteiths and data dates  to 1679 copyright 1984.  Written by J Ernest Monteith now deceased.  Our family purchased it from him, he had help compiling this book from many people one being my Uncle John Monteith.  Ernest says that this volume has been over a half century in the making.  Apparently the Monteiths, or Mentieths were kicked out of Scotland to Ireland The name Monteith was not always spelled as we spell it today.  In the early entries in the Cappagh Church registry which goes back to 1756, the name was usally spelled Menteith and once it was found Monteath.  The spelling Menteith was found as early as 1234.  Anyway my mother was a Monteith and came from Coatbridge and  went to school there, also her school still stands today.  My mother had 10 brothers and sisters and actually had an Anut Jane Mathie who died at the age of 108 in Scotland and she was well known for attending the dog races.  It sure is an eclectic family and I am going to Scotland to visit the Inchmahone Priory where the Earl of Menteith lies with his wife.  I hope this gets to you and you find this a little interesting, it goes on and on.

Thanks

Hello Monteith Family
Great site! Looking for information re Mary Jane Monteith b. 1814-1817 Ireland married John Robb b. 1803 in (Armagh?) Ireland circa 1836. They travelled to Canada circa 1841 with James Robb, a possible cousin of John's. They all lived in Logan Twp area Perth County Ontario.
I found Mary Jane (Monteith?) as Mounthead in son Alexander's death notice. The Robb and Monteith families were connected in Perth County and therefore am trying to confirm Mary Jane's maiden name and family.
Children of Mary Jane & John Robb are:
Mary Jane Robb, b. Jan 28, 1837 in Co. Armagh, Ireland; (twin of John)

John Robb, b. Jan 28, 1837 in Co. Armagh, Ireland; died Feb 9, 1911 in Stanwood, Snohomish Co. WA.

Isabella Robb, b. Nov 6, 1842 in Co. Armagh, Ireland; died July 4, 1913 in Virden, MB.

Alexander Robb, b. 1845; died 1898.  He married Anna Silva Oct 4, 1884 in Snohomish Co. WA; died Oct 4, 1892.

Martha Robb, b. 1847.

Isaiah Robb, b. 1851 in Ontario; died in Harriston, ON. Canada.

Robert Robb, b. Feb 24, 1853 in Logan Twp., Perth Co. Ontario; died Sept 10, 1919 in Norman, Snohomish Co. WA.

David Robb, b. 1855.

Note that John Robb Jr. and his wife had 2 sets of twins. His sister Isabella & husband Robert Rowe also had 1 set of twins.

Any connection to the Monteith or Robb family would be most helpful thank you.

Ellen

Hi,
I am thirteen years old and my name is Patrick Monteith.  I was bored online, so I decided to type in my name as a search and see what would come up.  I came to this site and read many different letters.  I live in Philadelphia, PA and I saw that a Monteith family moved from here to Illinois.  I had no idea that my family's line could be spread to so far as Ireland and many other places.  I find this quite amazing!  please right back if possible I want to learn more of my possible family blood line.
Thanks,
Pat
